How to Build an IGCSE Scheme of Work That Survives the Year
Turn the syllabus and school calendar into a realistic IGCSE scheme of work with sequencing, retrieval, assessment, revision and contingency built in.
A scheme of work is a decision map, not a topic calendar
Writing ‘Week 1: Cells, Week 2: Enzymes’ does not show how learning develops. A useful scheme of work explains why topics are sequenced, what prior knowledge each unit depends on, how students will practise the assessment demands and what evidence will cause the plan to change. Cambridge describes schemes of work as medium-term plans with ideas for pacing, delivery, activities and resources; they are a starting point, not a script.
Begin with constraints: teaching weeks, lesson minutes, holidays, internal exams, practical access, coursework windows and the external examination date. Remove at least ten percent of theoretical lesson time as contingency. A plan that uses every available period assumes no absence, reteaching, technical failure or school event—and therefore fails by design.
Sequence by dependency and difficulty
Cluster syllabus statements into units, then draw prerequisite arrows. In science, particle ideas may support bonding, reactions and energy. In Mathematics, algebraic manipulation supports functions and calculus-like extension work. In History or Global Perspectives, source evaluation routines should appear early because they serve multiple later topics. Teach enabling knowledge before it becomes an invisible barrier.
Do not keep all easy descriptive content for the beginning and all application for the end. Every unit should mix secure foundations with meaningful exam demands. Space important knowledge across the year through low-stakes retrieval, cumulative questions and interleaved practice rather than relying on one revision block.
Use a practical planning template
One row per week is usually too coarse and one row per minute is unusable. Plan at the lesson or short-sequence level, then link to detailed lesson plans only where the teaching is new, risky or observed.
- Syllabus references and measurable learning outcomes.
- Prerequisites plus one diagnostic question.
- Core explanation, models, examples, practical or source activities.
- Command words and exam-question types introduced or revisited.
- Formative evidence: hinge question, exit task, marked paragraph, quiz or practical observation.
- Adaptive response: scaffold, extension and likely reteach route.
- Resources with ownership and version—not a vague ‘use textbook’.
- Review point: when the content returns through retrieval or cumulative assessment.
Plan revision as diagnosis, not repetition
Reserve final-cycle time for full papers, but make revision decisions from evidence. Analyse mock results by syllabus statement, assessment objective and error type. A low score caused by missing knowledge needs different teaching from a low score caused by command-word interpretation or time management.
Review the scheme of work after every unit and at the end of the exam session. Record what took longer, which misconceptions recurred and which resources produced clear evidence. The document should become smarter with each cohort while remaining anchored to the current syllabus.
