How to Choose the Right IGCSE Subject to Teach
A degree-to-subject decision framework for aspiring IGCSE teachers, covering subject fit, syllabus distance, assessment style, demand and proof of competence.
Choose a syllabus, not a school subject label
‘I am good at science’ is not yet a teaching specialism. A marketable position names the board, level and syllabus: Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620, Cambridge O Level Chemistry 5070, or the relevant Pearson Edexcel International GCSE specification. Those documents define different content boundaries, paper structures and practical expectations. Your first decision is therefore smaller—and more useful—than choosing a broad field.
Download the current syllabus, specimen papers and a recent past paper before you commit. Highlight every content statement green, amber or red: green means you could teach it tomorrow; amber means you understand it but need to design explanations and practice; red means genuine subject study is required. A subject is a strong initial fit when most content is green, the amber areas are teachable within a realistic preparation period, and the red areas are limited rather than foundational.
Map your degree to the assessment—not just the content
Pharmacy often creates a useful foundation for Chemistry and Biology; medicine for Biology; engineering for Mathematics, Physics, ICT or Computer Science; commerce for Business, Accounting or Economics; and language degrees for First Language, Second Language or literature routes. These are starting hypotheses, not automatic permissions. A software engineer may know programming deeply but still need to learn how Cambridge rewards pseudocode. A pharmacist may know organic chemistry beyond IGCSE level but need to simplify explanations and teach practical-data questions precisely.
Assessment fit matters as much as knowledge. Do you enjoy extended writing, numerical problem solving, practical interpretation, source evaluation, language analysis or creative portfolios? Your natural teaching energy should match what students practise every week. If marking a subject’s real paper feels tedious or opaque, building a long-term career around it will be difficult even when the content looks familiar.
Score each option with a five-part decision matrix
Shortlist no more than three syllabuses and score each from one to five. Require evidence for every score: a timed paper result, a sample explanation, conversations with working teachers and a review of current school or tutoring demand. Avoid choosing solely because a subject is perceived as lucrative; high-demand subjects also attract experienced competitors.
- Subject depth: Can you solve and explain the hardest extended questions accurately?
- Syllabus distance: How much content and exam language must you newly learn?
- Teaching fit: Does the assessment style suit the way you think and communicate?
- Market access: Can you reach students, an assistant role, a school placement or a credible mentor in this subject?
- Evidence potential: Can you build a convincing demo, marked-script sample and revision resource within 60 days?
Go narrow first, then expand intelligently
Your first professional identity should be narrow enough to remember: ‘Cambridge 0620 Chemistry for first-time Extended candidates’ is stronger than ‘Science teacher for all systems’. Narrow positioning makes your preparation deeper, your content more relevant and referrals easier. It does not lock your career forever.
After one complete exam cycle, add an adjacent level or board only when you can articulate the differences. Chemistry 0620 experience may lead to O Level 5070 or Pearson Edexcel, but copy-pasting notes between boards is not competence. Expansion should begin with a fresh specification audit, paper comparison and updated scheme of work. Depth creates the reputation that later makes breadth valuable.
