AI Tools for IGCSE Teachers: A Safe, Syllabus-First Workflow
Use generative AI to reduce preparation time without outsourcing professional judgment, exposing student data or inventing mark-scheme requirements.
AI can draft; the teacher remains accountable
Generative AI can suggest examples, vary practice, simplify wording and organise a first draft. It can also invent syllabus statements, produce scientifically plausible errors, misread a mark scheme and expose personal data. UNESCO’s guidance calls for a human-centred, age-appropriate approach with privacy protection and human supervision. For an exam teacher, that means the current official syllabus and assessment materials remain the authority.
Never ask a tool ‘Teach me everything students need for Cambridge 0620’ and publish the answer. Give it a bounded task after you have selected the official requirement: ‘Create three new practice contexts for this teacher-supplied objective; do not imitate copyrighted past-paper wording; list assumptions for review.’ The quality of the workflow comes from the teacher’s verification, not the fluency of the output.
Use the VERIFY workflow
A repeatable protocol prevents convenience from becoming dependence. Save the source reference beside the generated draft so future you can see what was verified and against which version.
- V — Verify the task against the current syllabus statement and assessment objective.
- E — Exclude personal data, identifiable student work, confidential school information and locked exam content.
- R — Request a narrow output with constraints, level, terminology and intended use.
- I — Inspect every fact, calculation, scientific name, source claim and model response.
- F — Fit the material into your lesson sequence; add questioning, misconceptions and assessment evidence.
- Y — Yield final authority to official materials and your professional judgment; reject uncertain output.
High-value uses—and dangerous shortcuts
Useful tasks include generating non-copyrighted retrieval variations, creating contrasting examples, adapting reading complexity while preserving technical terms, drafting parent-update structures, and suggesting alternative contexts for a concept. The teacher must solve every question and check that the difficulty and language match the course.
Dangerous shortcuts include auto-marking high-stakes essays without human review, uploading identifiable scripts, generating predicted papers, fabricating citations, or asking AI to replace safeguarding and pastoral judgment. A polished wrong answer can train a whole cohort into an error. Never use a student-facing tool outside school policy and age requirements.
Teach students to verify, not merely detect AI
When policy permits classroom use, show students how to test a generated claim against the syllabus, textbook, data or source. Ask them to locate a missing causal link, compare two model answers or improve an imprecise explanation. This turns AI output into material for critical thinking rather than an answer vending machine.
Keep an audit trail for important resources: prompt purpose, output date, human checks and source. Disclose substantial AI assistance where readers or employers would reasonably expect to know. The professional advantage is not producing more worksheets; it is spending saved time on explanation, feedback and relationships that tools cannot replace.
